Driving Directions to Helen, Georgia

Nestled in the North Georgia mountains, Alpine Helen is accessible from several major highways. Select your starting region below for step-by-step directions.

From Atlanta

Option 1: Via I-85 and I-985

  1. Take I-85 North to Exit 113 for I-985. I-985 is a left-side exit.
  2. Follow I-985/U.S. 23 North, also known as Sidney Lanier Parkway.
  3. After Exit 24, the highway becomes U.S. 23/GA-365.
  4. Continue for approximately 20 miles to GA-384/Duncan Bridge Road.
  5. Turn left onto GA-384/Duncan Bridge Road.
  6. Continue approximately 16.5 miles until the road ends at GA-75/Helen Highway.
  7. Turn right onto GA-75 and continue approximately 3 miles into Alpine Helen.

Option 2: Via GA-400

  1. Take GA-400 North until the highway ends.
  2. Continue straight onto GA-115/Long Branch Road.
  3. Travel approximately 4.8 miles to the traffic light at GA-52.
  4. Turn right onto GA-115/GA-52/Cleveland Highway and continue toward Cleveland.
  5. At the square in Cleveland, follow the signs for Helen by turning left onto U.S. 129 North/GA-75.
  6. At the next traffic light—near Huddle House and Ingles—turn right onto GA-75 toward Helen.
  7. Continue approximately 7 miles into Alpine Helen.

From South Carolina and Points North

Via I-85 South

  1. Take I-85 South across the South Carolina–Georgia border.
  2. After approximately 5–6 miles, take Exit 173 for GA-17 toward Lavonia and Toccoa.
  3. At the end of the ramp, turn left onto GA-17 North toward Toccoa.
  4. Continue approximately 11.5 miles.
  5. Before reaching Toccoa, turn left to remain on GA-17/Toccoa Bypass. Do not take Alternate GA-17 through Toccoa.
  6. After approximately 5 miles, GA-17 joins GA-365 South/U.S. 123 South.
  7. Continue approximately 5 miles to U.S. 23/U.S. 441/GA-15/GA-365.
  8. Go straight through the traffic light and travel south on Tommy Irvin Parkway for approximately 7.5 miles.
  9. Take the Cornelia/Demorest exit for Historic Business U.S. 441 North/GA-105 West.
  10. Turn left at the end of the ramp and continue approximately 0.3 miles.
  11. At the traffic light, turn left onto Cannon Bridge Road/GA-105.
  12. Continue approximately 4.8 miles to GA-115/Clarkesville Highway.
  13. At the four-way stop, turn left onto GA-115 and continue approximately 2.7 miles.
  14. Turn right onto GA-384/Duncan Bridge Road.
  15. Continue approximately 8 miles until the road ends at GA-75/Helen Highway.
  16. Turn right onto GA-75 and continue approximately 3 miles into Alpine Helen.

From Tennessee and Points North

Via I-75 South

  1. Take I-75 South to Exit 336 for U.S. 76/U.S. 41 at Dalton and Rocky Face.
  2. Turn right at the end of the exit ramp.
  3. Follow U.S. 76 East/U.S. 41 South/GA-3 South for slightly more than 6 miles.
  4. When the highways divide, remain on U.S. 76 East/GA-52 toward Chatsworth.
  5. Continue slightly more than 8 miles to Chatsworth.
  6. At U.S. 411, turn right.
  7. Follow U.S. 76 East/U.S. 411 South for approximately 6.6 miles to Ramhurst.
  8. Turn left, then immediately turn right to remain on U.S. 76 East/GA-282 East.
  9. After approximately 2.3 miles, turn left to remain on U.S. 76/GA-282 East toward Ellijay.
  10. Continue slightly more than 17 miles to East Ellijay.
  11. At the stop sign, turn left and then immediately right onto GA-52 East. You will no longer be traveling on U.S. 76.
  12. Follow GA-52 East through Dahlonega.
  13. Just past Walmart, turn right to remain on GA-52 East.
  14. A few miles beyond Dahlonega, GA-115 North joins GA-52 East.
  15. Follow GA-115 North/GA-52 East for approximately 2 miles.
  16. When the highways divide, remain on GA-115 North.
  17. Continue to the square in Cleveland and follow the signs for Helen by turning left onto U.S. 129 North/GA-75.
  18. At the next traffic light—near Huddle House and Ingles—turn right onto GA-75 toward Helen.
  19. Continue approximately 7 miles into Alpine Helen.

From Western Georgia, Alabama, and Points West

Via I-20 East

  1. Take I-20 East toward Atlanta.
  2. At Exit 51B, take I-285 North toward Chattanooga.
  3. Continue on I-285 for approximately 22 miles.
  4. At Exit 33B, take I-85 North toward Greenville.
  5. Continue to Exit 113 and take the left-side exit for I-985.
  6. Follow I-985/U.S. 23 North, also known as Sidney Lanier Parkway.
  7. After Exit 24, the highway becomes U.S. 23/GA-365.
  8. Continue approximately 20 miles to GA-384/Duncan Bridge Road.
  9. Turn left onto GA-384 and continue approximately 16.5 miles.
  10. At GA-75/Helen Highway, turn right.
  11. Continue approximately 3 miles into Alpine Helen.

Via I-85 North

  1. Take I-85 North toward Atlanta to Exit 68 for I-285.
  2. At the interchange, take I-285 East/I-85 North toward Macon, Augusta, and Greenville.
  3. After approximately 2 miles, I-85 North separates toward downtown Atlanta. Remain on I-285 to bypass downtown.
  4. Continue on I-285 for approximately 28 miles until it reconnects with I-85.
  5. Take I-85 North toward Greenville.
  6. At Exit 113, take the left-side exit for I-985.
  7. Follow I-985/U.S. 23 North, also known as Sidney Lanier Parkway.
  8. After Exit 24, the highway becomes U.S. 23/GA-365.
  9. Continue approximately 20 miles to GA-384/Duncan Bridge Road.
  10. Turn left onto GA-384 and continue approximately 16.5 miles.
  11. At GA-75/Helen Highway, turn right.
  12. Continue approximately 3 miles into Alpine Helen.

From Central Georgia and Florida

Via I-75 North

  1. If traveling from south of Macon, take Exit 156 for I-475 North to bypass Macon. This is a left-side exit.
  2. I-475 reconnects with I-75 North near mile marker 177.
  3. Before Atlanta, take Exit 227 for I-675 North.
  4. At the I-675/I-285 interchange, take I-285 East toward Augusta and Greenville.
  5. Continue to Exit 33 for I-85.
  6. Take I-85 North toward Greenville.
  7. At Exit 113, take the left-side exit for I-985.
  8. Follow I-985/U.S. 23 North, also known as Sidney Lanier Parkway.
  9. After Exit 24, the highway becomes U.S. 23/GA-365.
  10. Continue approximately 20 miles to GA-384/Duncan Bridge Road.
  11. Turn left onto GA-384 and continue approximately 16.5 miles.
  12. At GA-75/Helen Highway, turn right.
  13. Continue approximately 3 miles into Alpine Helen.

From Eastern Georgia and South Carolina

Via I-20 West

  1. Take I-20 West toward Atlanta.
  2. At Exit 172 near Thomson, take U.S. 78/GA-17/GA-10 North toward Washington.
  3. As you approach Washington, turn left onto GA-47/U.S. 78 Business/GA-10 Business, also known as Robert Toombs Avenue.
  4. Follow the business route through Washington until it reconnects with U.S. 78.
  5. Turn left onto U.S. 78/GA-10 toward Athens.
  6. Near Athens, enter the Athens Perimeter Highway northbound.
  7. Follow U.S. 129 North/U.S. 29 North/U.S. 441 North/GA-10 Business Loop/GA-15 to Exit 10B.
  8. Take Exit 10B to remain on U.S. 441/U.S. 129 North and the Athens Perimeter Highway.
  9. Leave the perimeter highway at Exit 12.
  10. At the end of the ramp, turn right onto U.S. 441/GA-15 North toward Commerce.
  11. Remain on U.S. 441 North to bypass downtown Commerce. Business U.S. 441 also reconnects with the main highway but is a slower route.
  12. Continue on U.S. 441/GA-15 North toward Baldwin. Near the Chattahoochee National Forest, the road also carries the GA-198 designation.
  13. Approaching Baldwin, where U.S. 441 meets U.S. 123 and Business U.S. 441 turns right, turn left onto Willingham Avenue. It may also be marked as U.S. 23.
  14. Continue slightly more than 1 mile.
  15. Turn right onto Duncan Bridge Road.
  16. After crossing U.S. 23/GA-365, Duncan Bridge Road becomes GA-384.
  17. Continue approximately 16.5 miles until GA-384 ends at GA-75/Helen Highway.
  18. Turn right onto GA-75 and continue approximately 3 miles into Alpine Helen.

Alternate Route Through Athens

From I-20 West, take Exit 114 and follow U.S. 441 North to Athens. From there, follow the Athens-area directions above.
